Want to relocate to the island of Ulva?
In this article you can find out about a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to become one of the founding members of Ulva’s new community.
21 June 2018 was a historical date for the Isle of Ulva, a small island on the West Coast of Scotland. Ulva was the subject of a successful community buy-out after the private owner placed the island on the market. The community of Ulva, represented by North West Mull Community Woodland Company Ltd (NWMCWC), were able to secure funds from the Scottish Land Fund, the Macquarie Group and crowdfunding to allow them to buy the island. The community buy-out attracted media attention from all corners of the world which resulted in the community receiving over one hundred expressions of interest to move to the island.
One of the first priorities for the community, is a plan to renovate six existing dwellings to provide quality homes for the current two households and four for new-comers. This will support the community’s aspiration to regenerate Ulva and grow the population. New residents and businesses are required to enable the population to grow.
The renovation of the existing houses presents a strong starting point as individuals and/or businesses skilled in construction may have immediate employment opportunities to live and work on the island. Similar positions may also exist for those experienced in forestry to manage and maintain the lands on Ulva and North West Mull.
The Highlands Small Communities Housing Trust (HSCHT) were appointed by NWMCWC to design a survey which would allow individuals, families, and businesses who wish to relocate to Ulva and become part of the community to express their interest. The survey highlights the opportunities available on Ulva and the sort of skills and experience the community is looking for to become sustainable. Anyone with an interest in relocating to Ulva are encouraged to complete the survey and register their interest.
Should you believe that you could establish a life or business on the island, or know someone that could, the survey can be accessed here: https://hscht.survey.fm/ulva-survey-1
