Hill Crofting Training for Conservation Professionals
Raasay House, Isle of Raasay, Skye
The objectives of the training are:
- To increase understanding amongst conservation professionals of hill farming systems, crofting and common grazings
- To provide opportunities for genuine dialogue between the professionals & crofters
The course will be held on Raasay, a short Ferry crossing from Sconser on Skye. Crofting CPD: supported by the Princes' Countryside Fund and Foundation for Common Land this one day course will give those working in rural industries and agencies an insight into crofting governance, law and economics as well as a chance to get hands on livestock experience with the Raasay Crofters Association.
This is very much a participatory day with insights and knowledge shared by all who attend. Speakers include Viv Lewis (Foundation for Common Land), Siobhan MacDonald (SAC Consulting) and John Gillies (Raasay Crofters Association) Training is free of charge, as is evening meal, lunch and mini bus transport on the Island. Participants will have to fund their travel costs and overnight accommodation at Raasay House if they choose to come the night before.

If you wish to car share or come by foot this is encouraged as we will have access to the Raasay House minibus on the day. There will be an evening talk from Viv Lewis of the Foundation for Common Land and the Raasay Crofters Association followed by an evening meal on the 10th. For those who wish to attend the training only on the 11th the day will start at 10am in good time for the second ferry of the day from Sconser.
