Samples from anaerobic digesters sought

A research and innovation company is looking to acquire samples from anaerobic digesters used to dispose of sheep waste.

Dr Adam Ostrowski works at the Dundee-based APS Biocontrol where they develop biocontrol measures to extend the shelf life of fresh produce. Their technology is based on the use of bacteriophages, naturally occurring antagonists of bacteria, which can be found in the same environment as the bacteria they target.

By far the best source of bacteriophages is sewage and related material, including the contents of anaerobic digesters. The project Dr Ostrowski manages is focused on bacteria frequently found associated with sheep, therefore he is looking for options of acquiring samples from digesters used to dispose of sheep waste.

He is looking for farmers in the Dundee, Fife, Perth or Angus areas who have such tanks and would be willing to provide access for sampling.
