Favourite walks, everyday views, pieces of history, and hazards are amongst the photos that residents are being encouraged to enter into a Photo Survey and Competition before 1 December.

Open to all ages and abilities, families, groups and individuals in Carstairs Junction, Coalburn and Coulter, the competition contains Under 16s and Adult categories. Lucky winners will be announced in December and receive an active travel goodie bag as a prize.

The Photo Survey and Competition takes place as part of the Make Your Way active travel consultations, seeking to gather local knowledge on every day, functional journeys for communities. The consultations include paper surveys which are being delivered to each household in the three communities, as well as the following digital consultations:

Make Your Way is managed by Rural Development Trust’s Community Action Lanarkshire programme and supported by Paths for All Smarter Choices Smarter Places, South Lanarkshire Renewable Energy Fund and Rural Development Trust. It is being delivered by creative consultants icecream architecture.

Sarah O’Sullivan, Active Travel Project Officer for Community Action Lanarkshire says, “We’re hoping that lots of people take part in the consultations so we can build a comprehensive picture on existing active travel routes and user groups in the three communities. Information gathered will be used to promote active travel and its associated health and environmental benefits to local Primary School pupils and local residents, with an opportunity for maps, mapboards and wayfinding along one route to be created in consultation with each community and launching next spring.”

She continues, “Active travel is just one of the many issues that we have seen moving up the agenda since the onset of COVID, in terms of outdoor access and its associated impact on physical and mental health and wellbeing, reduced impact on roads and public transport, and reduction in carbon emissions.”

A programme of self-led walks and cycles will also take place as part of the programme alongside remote Active Travel Workshops in eight local Primary Schools. Bikeability sessions will also be scheduled if current restrictions on external visitors to schools are lifted.
