National Council of Rural Advisers holds first meeting
The National Council of Rural Advisers met formally for the first time on Wednesday (20 September 2017). The expert group, convened by the Cabinet Secretary for the Rural Economy and Connectivity, Fergus Ewing to look at future rural policy and support, were joined by Mr Ewing for part of the meeting as the Council began their initial discussions.
Co-Chair Lorne Crerar said ‘creating a vibrant, sustainable and inclusive rural economy is vital to the economic health of Scotland. The Council were re-assured by Mr Ewing that supporting the rural economy is a top government priority, our task now is to maximise the opportunity this represents’.
Co-Chair Alison Milne added ‘“The Council recognises that the economy of rural Scotland is hugely diverse, from our traditional primary sectors to those representing new and innovative business solutions. Our opportunity lies in identifying ways that the rural economy can expand and grow for the benefit of everyone, whilst recognising the different needs of our sectors and people.”
The National Council of Rural Advisers will produce an interim report later in the year and final recommendations in 2018.
