Funding to support community buildings
There is still time for community groups to apply for funding to improve energy efficency in village halls, community hubs and other community buildings.
On 1 May 2024, the SCVO hosted a conference aimed at those running village and community halls across Scotland. Scottish Rural Network, along with a other stakeholders, funded and support the event with delegates joined us both online and in-person at Birnam Arts to connect, share ideas, and inspire each other.
At the event Local Energy Scotland delivered an excellent presentation about their work to support community organisations develop efficient and economical energy usage solutions. Highlighted was the Community Buildings Fund, helps community organisations reduce their building energy costs and greenhouse gas emissions by installing renewable technologies such as heat pumps, batteries, and solar photovoltaic (PV) panels, along with energy efficiency measures.
Grants of up to 80% of eligible costs up to a maximum of £80,000 are available however the fund will close to new applications on 31 August 2024, or when funding is fully allocated, whichever is sooner.
The funding is subject to availability and subject to the applicant’s ability to complete the project and claim all funds by 28 February 2025. To be eligible the apply the organisation should be like a charity, community or faith group based in Scotland.
You’ll need to install eligible measures like air source heat pumps, solar panels, energy efficiency measures and be committed to decarbonising your heating. The funded work should improve a community or charitable building which you own or have a lease for that’s used frequently with high energy costs.
Local Energy Scotland administers and manages the Scottish Government’s Community and Renewable Energy Scheme (CARES). CARES supports communities to engage with, participate in, and benefit from the transition to net zero emissions.
Through CARES, Local Energy Scotland offers a range of financial support and advice to community groups to get local energy projects up and running. The service is free and impartial, and with support at every stage – from initial planning, through development and funding applications, right up to and beyond the launch. Local Energy Scotland can also direct you to other useful sources of funding and support, including the Community Buildings Fund.
