The Gathering

The countdown to The Gathering 2023 has officially started, the events planned over 2 days, Wednesday 10th May & Thursday 11th May, include trips to local transport operators and community hubs on the 10th and the plenary session on the 11th.

The sale of peat is set to be banned in Scotland, as part of wider plans to protect peatlands and reduce carbon emissions. 

As most extracted peat is used for horticulture, the Scottish Government is looking for views from gardeners and commercial growers.

Environmental organisations, community groups, land owners and farmers will be eligible to apply for a share of £1.8 million funding to help grow their nature projects.

The ‘Farm to Fork – a new, sustainable perspective’ conference will take place on 23rd March at Bowhouse in Fife, hosted by RBST in partnership with Balcaskie Estate.

The Scottish Government has set out the list of measures for the Agricultural Reform Programme (ARP) and has stated:

Farmers are well known for hard work and dedication to their stock - but one thing that has now become apparent is how dedicated they should also be to their mental health.  With long hours of work on a daily basis, alot of this being lone working and huge financial strain in such difficult times farmers are faced with a huge mental health struggle.

A route map and list of draft measures has been published by The Scottish Government which provides further clarity on how they intend to deliver the ambitions set out in the Vision for Agriculture, published in March 2022.

Scotland has achieved its highest ever reported score in an international survey which asks 60,000 adults from 20 countries what their perceptions are of 60 nations.

The Nation Brands Index (NBI) 2022 survey scores and ranks countries across six dimensions including Culture, Tourism, Governance, Immigration and Investment, Exports, and People.

Rural Affairs Secretary Mairi Gougeon has announced a new payment scheme for farmers and crofters to improve the health and welfare of sheep and cattle, ahead of an address to the National Farmers Union Scotland annual general meeting.
